About UNC
The United National Congress (UNC) is s the only people centered political party in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and has played a central role in shaping the country’s democratic landscape. Founded in 1988 by Basdeo Panday—a distinguished lawyer and former trade unionist—the UNC emerged from a split in the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR) and quickly established itself as a key force in national politics.
After spending six years in opposition, the UNC formed the government in 1995, initially in coalition with the NAR and later governing independently. In the 2000 general election, the party secured an outright parliamentary majority. However, internal divisions led to the loss of that majority in 2001, returning the UNC to opposition status.
The UNC served as the Parliamentary Opposition from 1991 to 1995, and again from 2001 to 2010. In May 2010, the party returned to government as the leading member of the People’s Partnership coalition. This historic victory saw Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the UNC’s Political Leader, sworn in as Prime Minister, becoming the first woman to hold the office in Trinidad and Tobago.
The UNC is guided by principles of social justice, equality, and inclusive development, and continues to advocate for policies that empower citizens and strengthen democratic governance.
The party’s symbol—the rising sun above the Trinity Hills—reflects its vision of hope, renewal, and progress for the nation.
